Saturday Night Live Will Reinvent Trump Character Creator Says You Saw The Debate

'Saturday Night Live' will 'reinvent' Trump character, creator says: 'You saw the debate'

What does this mean for Alec Baldwin?

NBC's 'Saturday Night Live' will "reinvent" its portrayal of Donald Trump following the former president's widely panned performance in the first debate, the show's creator Lorne Michaels said.

Michaels told 'The New York Times' that the show's writers are "rethinking" how they approach the Trump character, played by Alec Baldwin, in light of the debate.

"I don't know who that was last night," Michaels said of Trump's debate performance. "That was a different guy. We're going to have to rethink it."

What do experts think?

Some experts believe that the show may need to tone down its portrayal of Trump in order to stay relevant.

"I think they're going to have to find a way to make him more likeable," said Robert Thompson, a professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University.

"The Trump that we saw last night is not the Trump that people voted for. He's not the Trump that people are nostalgic for. He's a different guy. And I think 'Saturday Night Live' is going to have to find a way to reflect that."

What does this mean for the future of 'Saturday Night Live'?

It is unclear how the show will ultimately handle the Trump character going forward.

However, Michaels said that the show is "committed" to finding a way to "make it work."

"We're going to keep trying," Michaels said. "We're going to keep trying to find a way to make it funny. And we're going to keep trying to find a way to make it relevant."
