Taiwan: Chipmaker TSMC to Spend Billions on New Fab amid Global Shortage
Amidst a global semiconductor shortage, TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, has announced significant investments in a new fabrication facility in Taiwan.
The move aims to boost production and address the ongoing supply chain disruptions that have impacted various industries and consumers worldwide.
TSMC, based in Hsinchu, Taiwan, has been a dedicated semiconductor foundry since 1987 and supports a thriving ecosystem of technology companies. The semiconductor industry, which plays a crucial role in modern electronics, consumes a significant portion of the power generated in Taiwan. By 2022, TSMC alone is estimated to account for over 10% of Taiwan's total electricity consumption.
The new fabrication facility, also known as a fab, will be located in the southern Taiwanese city of Tainan. The investment, estimated to be in the billions of dollars, will focus on advanced semiconductor technologies and is expected to create thousands of jobs.
Industry analysts believe that TSMC's expansion plans will help alleviate the ongoing chip shortage, which has affected industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, and healthcare. The global semiconductor market is projected to grow substantially in the coming years, with TSMC poised to play a leading role in meeting the increasing demand for chips.
