Biggios Inconsistent Playing Time

Cavan Biggio: A Fantasy Baseball Enigma

Biggio's Inconsistent Playing Time

Heading into his age 29 season, Cavan Biggio finds himself in a familiar position: a question mark in fantasy baseball. Despite entering his fifth MLB season, Biggio's playing time has been largely sporadic, leaving fantasy owners wondering if he has the potential to be a consistent contributor.

2023: A Tale of Two Halves

The 2023 season was a microcosm of Biggio's career thus far. He began the year in a part-time role, but an injury to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in May opened up the door for more playing time. Biggio seized the opportunity, hitting .292 with 6 home runs and 18 RBIs in 34 games before the All-Star break.

However, after the break, Biggio's production took a significant dip. He batted just .221 with 2 home runs and 10 RBIs in 37 games, losing playing time to the likes of Whit Merrifield and Santiago Espinal. As a result, Biggio finished the season with a disappointing .261 batting average, 8 home runs, and 28 RBIs in 71 games.

Fantasy Outlook for 2024

Biggio's fantasy value for 2024 is difficult to predict. He has shown flashes of potential, but his inconsistent playing time makes him a risky investment. Furthermore, the Blue Jays have several other talented infielders, including Bo Bichette, Santiago Espinal, and Matt Chapman, which could further limit Biggio's opportunities.

If Biggio can secure a regular role in the Blue Jays' lineup, he has the skills to be a valuable fantasy asset. He is a solid contact hitter with good speed and the ability to hit for both power and average. However, given his track record of inconsistent playing time, fantasy owners should approach him with caution and consider him more of a depth piece or late-round flier.
