Atletico Madrid Hold Dortmund to Secure Advantage in Champions League Quarter-Final
Simeone Cautious Despite First-Leg Lead

Madrid, Spain – April 16, 2024 – Atletico Madrid clung on to a slender advantage after the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund, holding the German side to a 3-2 victory at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
Despite taking an early lead through Koke, Atletico Madrid were pushed back by a spirited Dortmund side that equalized through Julian Brandt. However, the Spanish team regained the lead through Angel Correa, only for Karim Adeyemi to level the game once again.
Marcos Llorente's late goal in the 84th minute ultimately proved crucial, giving Atletico a one-goal advantage to take to the Westfalenstadion for the second leg on April 23.
Despite the positive result, Atletico manager Diego Simeone remained cautious, warning that Dortmund's home strength should not be underestimated.
"We are happy with the result, but we know it is not over yet," Simeone said after the match. "Dortmund is a very strong team, especially at home, so we will need to be at our best."
If Atletico can hold on to their lead in Germany, they will reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2017.
